Uru Handloom was born from a love of Banaras, and a belief that the diaspora should never have to choose between authenticity and convenience.
We come from a family of weavers in Varanasi. Three generations. Over fifty years devoted to the craft of Banarasi handloom. For decades, that heritage lived only in India. Today it lives a next day away from your door.
Every saree and dupatta we carry is handwoven by master artisans in the lanes of Banaras, in pure Katan silk and intricate zari, then shipped to you the next business day from Dallas, Texas. Meet the Founder
Hi, I'm Uruba, the founder of Uru Handloom. I was born and brought up in Banaras, the beating heart of Indian silk weaving. From a very young age I was surrounded by looms, by the soft rush of silk threads and the glimmer of zari. I am a third generation weaver, and my family has been in the Banarasi handloom business for over fifty years. This craft is not just my work. It is my childhood, my home, my inheritance.
About ten years ago I moved to the US for graduate school. I studied finance and built a career in it. They were good years, but they never quite touched the part of me that grew up among those looms.
The idea for Uru Handloom found me during the pandemic. Every time an occasion came around, I could not find good quality Indian ethnic wear here, so I would ask my family to ship pieces to Dallas just to have something beautiful to wear. It did not take long to realize my friends and colleagues were quietly facing the very same longing.
So I started Uru Handloom: a way to carry a piece of Banaras to the diaspora, without the wait, the tariffs, or the guesswork. It grew faster than I ever dreamed. In 2023, I left my finance career to pursue it full time, and I have never looked back.
Nothing makes me happier than talking to our customers and packing these sarees and dupattas with my own hands. Every order is a little piece of home, on its way to make someone feel like their most beautiful self. That is why I do this.
